Emergency accommodation for the survivors of the Carrickmines fire has been blocked by local residents.
Members of the South Dublin community have used cars and heavy machinery to cut off access to a site at Glenamuck Cottages close to the site of Saturday's fatal fire.
Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has said it gave permission for a family of 15 to move onto a temporary halting site on Council-owned lands at the end of Rockville Drive, off Glenamuck Road, on Thursday.
A separate site at a different location has also been identified to house families on a permanent basis, but it won't be ready for eight months.
Local residents have objected to the emergency accommodation, saying there needs to be permanent accommodation instead.
Sue Fitzpatrick lives nearby and has said she disagrees with the protestors and thinks the temporary halting site should be allowed to go ahead: “I don’t know but I don’t see why they shouldn’t, they are not going to cause any trouble,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.
However settled residents have objected to the move.
Five adults and five children lost their lives in the weekend blaze which destroyed an entire halting site.
“They should be allowed up there, it is only for eight months after all”.
