  • Eddie Hutch senior has been shot dead in Dublin
  • The man in his 50s died at the scene
  • Gardaí believe the attack is in retaliation for the Regency Hotel shooting

Update 11.30pm: Gardaí believe that at least four masked men were involved in this incident.

It is understood that they arrived at the scene in a Silver 3 Series BMW which was found abandoned on St Patricks Parade, Drumcondra a short time later.

Investigating Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have seen this car or anyone with information to contact the incident room at Mountjoy Garda Station on 01 666 8600, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any Garda Station.

Update 9.30pm: Minister for Justice and Equality, Frances Fitzgerald has said, "tonight's fatal shooting in Dublin is another deplorable example of the ruthlessness of gangland criminals. It seems that some gangs are intent on waging a feud where human life counts for nothing."

"The Gardaí will take all necessary steps to try to prevent further bloodshed but we have to recognise the challenges they face.

"Members of gangs who have fears for their safety should come forward to the Gardaí.

"I will be meeting with the Garda Commissioner and her senior officers tomorrow."

Gerry Adams said, “I want to condemn the latest shooting incident tonight in Dublin, which has brought further fear and intimidation to the streets of our capital.

“Those behind this latest shooting, and those behind the dreadful attack last Friday at the Regency Hotel, must be apprehended and taken off our Streets.

“The Gardaí need the fullest possible support from the community in their efforts to do this.”

Update 8.40pm: Emergency services have pronounced a man is his 50s dead at the scene and did not attempt resuscitation.

The man has been named as Eddie Hutch senior, brother of Gerry 'The Monk' Hutch.

It is believed that he received one bullet to the head.

Previous: A man is believed to have died in a gangland killing in Dublin's north inner city this evening.

The Irish Examiner understands that the man was gunned down by what was described as a “four man hit squad” on Poplar Row in Ballybough.

The suspected victim is believed to be well known to Gardaí who are attending at the scene.

Gardaí believe the victim is connected to Gary Hutch.

It is the second violent murder in four days in Dublin and this shooting occurred a short distance away from the Regency Hotel on Friday.

Gardaí suspect that this shooting is linked to the shooting at the Regency Hotel.

This will inevitably place law and order at the centre of the general election in the coming days, as Sinn Fein launches its manifesto tomorrow.

The party has proposed the abolition of the non-jury Special Criminal Court which tries cases linked to terrorism and organised crime.

Gardaí have confirmed that a man was shot at the location this evening.

Well known criminal David Byrne (34) was gunned down at a boxing weigh-in at the hotel.
