DPP declines chance to charge 'largest facilitator of child porn on Earth'
The High Court has heard the Director for Public Prosecutions will not press charges against a man described as the largest facilitator of child pornography on the planet.
Eric Eoin Marques of Mountjoy Square, Dublin is facing extradition to the United States for allegedly conspiring to distribute illicit material.
He appeared in court in a grey hooded top and jeans.
The 28-year-old, who has dual Irish and US citizenship, is fighting his extradition to America on charges of conspiring to distribute and advertise child pornography.
If convicted he could face a lifetime in jail as the allegations relate to images on over a hundred "anonymous websites" described as being extremely violent and graphic.
Marques was arrested at his flat in Mountjoy Square in Dublin last August.
His solicitor wrote to the DPP in November indicating that he would plead guilty if prosecuted in this jurisdiction.
A file was submitted to the Director Claire Loftus, but today it emerged she has decided not to press charges against Marques.
His barrister, Remy Farrell, described the development as significant and Mr Justice John Edwards put the case back until January 21 to allow both sides time to address the complex issues involved.
