Defence forces out in big numbers from today to help flood-hit communities

Defence Minister Simon Coveney has said the number of Defence Forces personnel helping flood-hit communities will significantly increase from today.

Hundreds of roads around the country remain flooded this morning, as the latest rainfall alert comes to an end.

Counties Cork, Clare, Tipperary, Waterford and Kilkenny are worst affected with a number of national routes still impassable.

In one of the worst hit locations - Graiguenamanagh, Co Kilkenny - the village remains blocked by floods.

Conditions are set to improve later today, but tomorrow will be wet again - bringing the risk of more flooding.

Sharon Lynsky of AA Roadwatch, has details on some flooded routes: “A number of routes are still impassable following further heavy rain overnight,

“At the moment parts of Munster and Leinster particularly around Cork are still worst affected,

“In Cork the N25 is still closed between Kill and Castlemarytr, due to flooding and diversions are signposted for you there,

“And also for any motorists in Fermoy the bridge has now closed to facilitate the erection of flood barriers, Gardaí are on point duty but we are advising motorists to use other routes where you can.”
