Presidential candidate Mary Davis is defending her independence today following revelations about the level of payments she received for sitting on state boards.

The former Special Olympics chief received almost €190,000 in payments following her appointment by Fianna Fáil ministers to three boards.

The state board payments she received were on top of her €156,000-a-year salary as managing director of the Special Olympics, according to the Irish Independent.

The appointments included Campus and Stadium Ireland, Dublin Airport Authority and the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland.

But Davis today insisted she has always been non-political.

"I have never hidden the fact that I have been appointed to various different boards though the years," she said.

"But there seems to be a suggestion today in the papers that the appointment to these boards was a direct association with Fianna Fáil.

"That is totally not true.

"I am an independent candidate. I am not affiliated with any political party."
