The cross on the summit of Carrauntoohil has been re-instated.
The MacGillycuddy Reeks Mountain Access Forum had confirmed on Thursday that they intended to re-erect the cross after it was recently found cut down.
The forum said the job was done today on a voluntary basis by Mike O’Shea, Work at Height, staff from Liebherr Container Cranes in Killarney, members of Beaufort Community Council and local landowners.
The cross, originally erected on on top of Ireland's highest mountain by Beaufort Community Council and local landowners in 1976, was discovered cut down last Saturday.
Whilst condemning the act of vandalism, Atheist Ireland had objected to the reinstatement of a cross, saying that it is not reflective of the whole community.
The MacGillycuddy Reeks Mountain Access Forum thanked everyone who offered their support and assistance.
