Credit card size driving licence could be introduced

A new driving licence, the size of a credit card, could be implemented here in Ireland before the end of the year.

The new format will make it easier for Ireland's 1.9m motorists to carry the licence, as they are now legally required to do so. Failure to carry it could result in a maximum fine of €800 and will incur penalty points by the end of the year.

In many other countries where there is a similar obligation a licence the size of a credit card was introduced to make it easier for the motorist to carry it. Even though ours are not yet wallet size it became an offence at midnight for drivers not to be able to produce their licence when required to do so by gardai.

The Government is hoping our traditional licences will be replaced by the smaller ones by the middle of 2003.
