The High Court has awarded a €13.5m lump sum to an eight-year-old Co Cork boy brain damaged at birth.

The High Court has awarded a €13.5m lump sum to an eight-year-old Co Cork boy brain damaged at birth.

Gill Russell from Aghada, is in a wheelchair, needs 24 hour care and can only communicate with his eyes.

Liability was admitted and he received an apology from the HSE and Cork University Maternity Hospital two years ago.

At that time he received an interim payment of €1.4m on the basis that a new law allowing for periodic payments was to be introduced.

He has received a lump sum in the absence of new legislation.
