Boxes are now being opened across the country and the ballots are being separated in the 43 constituencies around the country for the Marriage Equality referendum.

Votes in the Carlow/Kilkenny by-election will be counted alongside those in the Marriage Equality referendum, while counting in the Presidential Age referendum will take place afterwards.

Ireland has made history by putting the issue of marriage equality to a popular vote, and we are about to find out if it has passed.

Most observers expect it will, and with a two to one majority.

Tallies from around the country are expected to come in around mid-morning.

Once each constituency count is completed the result will be sent to the national results centre in Dublin Castle where it will be officially declared. Constituency results will be declared throughout the afternoon and the final overall result is forecast to be declared any time from 5pm.

The first count in the by-election is expected around 4pm, while the result of the Presidential Age referendum is anticipated to be declared around 90 minutes after the Marriage referendum result.
