Cork launches scheme to become first cash-free city in Ireland
Cork is piloting a cashless payment initiative.
The Cork City Centre Forum is encouraging people to use chip and pin, contactless or other electronic payment options.
The group says it is an innovative move for Cork which takes the region a step closer to becoming one that leads the way in the move towards a cash-free society.
Businessman and publican, Paul Montgomery, said: "This is a major step for Cork city in establishing us as Ireland’s 'smartest' city and a region that’s leading the way in the move towards such an innovative global trend.
"Already Irish consumers make a contactless payment every second, two million each month and this is just the start.
He emphasised that going cash-free is the customer’s choice, but that it is also very important for businesses and tourists.
He said: "For businesses, there is increased flexibility and efficient financial management as well as lower security costs. From a consumer perspective, transactions can be more reliable and secure."
