Cork beaches closed to swimmers; dangerous levels of e-coli found

Cork County Council has banned swimming at three beaches in the county as a precautionary measure after dangerous levels of e-coli were found in the water.

The bathing spots affected are Redbarn in Youghal, Garretstown near Kinsale, and Garryvoe near Castlemartyr.

It's understood the bacteria - which is often found in slurry - has been washed into the sea in large quantities in recent weeks.

Public notices have been put in place at each of the beaches and further inspections are expected to be carried out on Monday.
