The HSE is planning a cochlear implant programme at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

The executive has begun recruiting for the unit, which is due to come into operation in the Autumn.

Sinn Fein TD Gerry Adams has said the programme is crucially important given that around 200 deaf children need a cochlear implant.
