Cash deliveries no longer escorted by gardaí and military

Bank deliveries which can be worth up to millions of euro are being carried out without the assistance of Gardaí and the Defence Forces.

It is understood the cash-in-transit escort security, which had accompanied deliveries outside Dublin, ceased operating two weeks ago.

It is the first time money is to be transferred between banks without any armed escort since the height of the Troubles.

According to a report in today's Irish Independent, the Department of Defence had been paid close to €50m for the security arrangements in six years, after an arrangement was made for payment in 2005.

Prior to that, it's believed the banks only covered a fraction of the costs.
