Ivor Callely has told an Oireachtas committe that he was living in West Cork when he was appointed to the Seanad.
The Senator is being quizzed by the committee on the €81,000 in expenses he claimed over two years.
Senator Callely says he moved to Bantry following the "traumatic" loss of his North Dublin Central seat in 2007.
He said of his decision to base himself in West Cork: "I feel this was the right place for me to deal with the on-going trauma I was experiencing."
