Cairo court postpones trial of Dublin teenager until October

Ibrahim Halawa's trial has been postponed until October 4.

The Dublin teenager's trial was due to take place in Egypt this morning.

The 19-year-old was arrested in 2013 in Cairo at a time when protests were taking place in the city.

Sinn Féin MEP Lynn Boylan, who is in the country, said today was another farce.

She said: "It's very hard to know what is going on, it's a real eye-opener to see how difficult it is for the familes to get any information in relation to the proceedings.

"We are here for the last four hours now standing in 36 degree heat with no shelter, and all of the relatives of the 493 prisoners were denied access today.

"It seems to be just on the whim of the judge whether or not the families are allowed in."

Ms Boylan said it is devastating news for Ibrahim’s family who are in Egypt today for his trial.

She said: "The judge has said that nobody will be released before the 4th of October, with no chance of bail for Ibrahim before that date.

"Ibrahim’s family were not allowed to attend the trial or meet Ibrahim.

"Ibrahim, who suffers from a medical condition, has been denied medical treatment despite repeat requests by his lawyer.

"It’s undeniable now that Ibrahim will never receive a fair trial."
