Burton wants garda checkpoints for checking workers' credentials

Social Protection Minister Joan Burton in discussions with the Justice Minister to send 20 gardaí to her department.

Minister Burton says she plans to use them to mount checkpoints at industrial estates to ensure workers are registered and are not also claiming the dole.

"Where checkpoints are run with, say for instance, the gardaí … particularly with the Revenue Commissioners - the word gets out pretty quickly that checks are being done to make sure that people going into work, for instance in an industrial estate, that they are properly registered," she said.
