Burton: Shatter will resolve bugging controversy without inquiry

The Minister for Social Protection said she expects Alan Shatter to "resolve" the issues around the bugging of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission.

Speaking at the Labour party conference in Meath, Burton said she does not support those "throwing around" calls for an independent inquiry.

"I know a number of people have been throwing around suggestions of jumping towards some kind of commission of inquiry, but we know, to our cost, the cost of that kind of inquiry," she said.

Minister Burton also welcomed Shatter's decision to appear before the Oireachtas oversight committee.

She added that confidence in the Garda Ombudsman is essential, and further investigation may be needed.
