Burned-out car linked to gun attack on police

A burned-out car has been recovered by detectives investigating a pre-Christmas gun attack on a police station in the North.

Dissident republicans opposed to the peace process are prime suspects after shots were fired at Lisnaskea barracks in Co Fermanagh, close to the border with the Republic, on December 23.

Rounds struck the rear of the station but nobody was injured, a spokesman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.

Investigators believe a grey or green Volkswagen Passat was used by the gang and shortly afterwards police received a report of a saloon-type car on fire in nearby Kinawley.

A spokesman said: “Officers have since recovered the vehicle and are investigating a link between this car and the attack on the station.”

Republican extremists have ramped up their efforts to kill members of the security forces in recent weeks, with a series of attempted bombings and gun attacks on police.
