Gardaí have released the name of a man whose body was found in a bog in Co Meath this week.

Gerard Daly was reported missing three years ago. The 45-year-old was last seen at his home in Bailieboro in Cavan on June 26, 2011.

He was formally from Knockmore Grove in Tallaght, Dublin and was well known to dog enthusiasts.

A missing persons report was filed three days after he disappeared, but no trace of him was found until two days ago, when his remains were found in a bog in Meath.

The find was made during excavation work at Oristown Bog near Kells on Thursday.

A burnt-out shell of a car was also recovered at the scene. It is understood the car was reported stolen in the Kells area in 2003.

A man in his 50s was arrested in March last year in connection with the investigation but was released without charge the following day.

A technical and forensic examination at the scene has concluded and the investigation continues this evening.
