Another Minister calls on Brady to resign
Another Government Minister has today called on Cardinal Sean Brady to consider his position as the Catholic Primate of Ireland.
Junior Education Minister Ciaran Cannon's comments come after allegations were made about the Cardinal in a BBC documentary, broadcast earlier this week.
In the programme, victims of clerical child sexual abuse claimed that Cardinal Brady failed to warn the parents of victims, or the Gardaí or police after he heard about allegations of abuse against the convicted paedophile priest Brendan Smyth.
However, Cardinal Brady said that he did pass on the information to his then superior and was appalled to find out, years later, that it had not been acted upon.
Fine Gael TD and Junior Minister Ciaran Cannon has reiterated calls from the Education Minister Ruairi Quinn and the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore that Cardinal Brady should resign.
"As a politician, not alone do you function as a politician the national parliament, you also should function effectively as a member of Irish society as an active an responsible citizen of Irish society," he said.
"I think most of the politicians that expressed an opinion this week did so in that capacity.
"I agree wholeheartedly with Minister Quinn when he suggests that Cardinal Brady should seriously consider his position in the context of being the overall patron for the vast majority of schools in this country."
