Almost half of the population would not choose a Christian school for their child
Almost half of the population would not choose a Christian school for their child, if they had the choice.
That is one of the findings of a new poll of over 1000 people across the country.
Currently, around 90% of primary schools are under the patronage of the Catholic Church - and in many areas, parents have no choice of school.
Michael Barron is Director of Equate, which was set up to reform how schools are run: “Given a choice, 46% of people would not choose a Christian school, in their local area.
“At present only 6% of schools at primary level in Ireland are not Christian so that shows a real need and thirst for change.
“The other findings are that eight out of 10 people believe that the Irish education system needs to be fundamentally reformed so that no child is discriminated against on a basis of their religion.”
