Ahern: FF suffering for doing 'the right thing'

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern has said he believes Fianna Fáil is suffering in the opinion polls because of the unpopular decisions it has been forced to implement during the economic crisis.

Justice Minister Dermot Ahern has said he believes Fianna Fáil is suffering in the opinion polls because of the unpopular decisions it has been forced to implement during the economic crisis.

Mr Ahern was reacting to this morning's opinion poll putting support for Fianna Fáil at just 25%.

The Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, has also seen his satisfaction rating plummet to just 21%, the lowest of all the political leaders.

Just 10% of respondents said they were satisfied with the Government's performance, but Mr Ahern says he believes this is because Fianna Fáil is prepared to do the right thing regardless of its popularity.

Meanwhile, Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore says the poll supports his view that a general election is needed to produce a Government with majority support.

He says Ireland needs a fresh start to get the economy moving again.
