Adams criticised for newspaper editor remarks

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers has criticised Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams for comments he made about holding a national newspaper editor at gun point.

Deputy Adams made the comments at a fundraising function in New York and a subsequent online blog.

Responding to the remarks the organisation which represents 18,000 publications in 120 countries said they had serious concerns in light of violence against journalists.

The National Newspapers of Ireland is also expressing concern at comments, adding while they appear to have been made in jest, they show a lack of understanding about the role of a free press in a healthy democracy.
