€37.5 MILLION worth of cannabis seized

Gardaí and Revenue officers have seized a massive consignment of herbal cannabis, worth an estimated €37.5m.

The haul was made as part of an ongoing investigation targeting organised crime groups operating here.

The joint intelligence-led operation was conducted by Revenue’s customs service and the Gardaí's drugs and organised crime bureau supported by officers from the Dublin Metropolitan Region.

This investigation resulted in the identification and interception of a consignment which arrived into Dublin. A search today resulted in the massive seizure of 1,873kgs of herbal cannabis destined for the Irish market.

The Garda spokesman said investigations are continuing both in Ireland and internationally, linked to the significant seizure of drugs, which he said were destined for the Irish market.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald commended both the Garda and Revenue on the seizure.

'Week in week out the Gardaí and Customs work very closely in trying to prevent the importation of illicit drugs into the country and they have many successes," she said.

"Today's seizure, in particular, demonstrates their determination and resourcefulness in going after the activities of drugs gangs who seek to profit from causing such misery in communities through their deadly trade.

"The Government will continue to fully support both An Garda Síochána and the Customs Service in carrying out this vital work."
