Almost 16,000 people applied for the 5,000 jobs advertised for this year's national census.

The quota of applicants needed was actually achieved within 48 hours of the jobs being advertised.

This morning, the central statistics office began to interview some 15,773 people who applied for the census enumerator positions.

The CSO says it hopes to be in a position to notify successful applicants by the end of February.

This year's census will be held on Sunday April 10th.
