Dunnes Stores, SuperValu and Lidl are strongest competitors of grocery market, new figures show

Dunnes Stores, SuperValu and Lidl have shown increases in their grocery market share, beating last years figures, according to Kantar Worldpanel in Ireland.

Lidl has reached a record high market share of 11.9%, beating its previous best of 11.8% last year.

The fresh figures reveal Dunnes Stores posted the strongest growth, with sales up 5.8% ahead of last year to 21.2%.

SuperValu continues to increase its growth with a 3.2% increase maintaining its position as the number one grocery retailer for the 11th consecutive month.

Business director David Berry said Lidl is "reaping the rewards of recruiting 34,000 new shoppers over the past 12 weeks.

“Aldi’s share of the market has increased by 0.1 percentage points to 11.3%, alongside a significant improvement in sales growth.

"The retailer has recovered well since March this year when it saw sales growth dip below 1.0%: a healthy 4.4% increase in the past 12 weeks shows its performance is firmly back on track.”

Managing Director for Lidl Ireland JP Scally commenting on the latest figures said: "At Lidl we are delighted to see our share of the Irish grocery market continue to grow, reaching a record high.

"Our increasing sales clearly demonstrate that customers are still demanding value for money and our "Full Shop, Half Price" campaign is delivering on that value promise.

"Our weekly "Super Savers" promotions continue to attract unprecedented shopper numbers, 34,000 in the past 12 weeks alone, and the expansion of our summer range, which includes prepared salads, has also proved extremely popular."
