Govt confirms plans to raise retirement age

The Taoiseach Brian Cowen has confirmed the Government does plan to raise the retirement age, but not in the immediate future.

A new pensions plan will be unveiled by Government this week, which will outline increasing the retirement age beyond 65 in stages.

Bank of Ireland is expected to tell staff tomorrow that it will raise the retirement age to 68 in a bid to deal with a massive black hole in the company's pension fund.
