A woman has been arrested after killing her two pet dogs by throwing them out of her eighth-floor flat because she was “fed up” of taking them out.

The 53-year-old reportedly told officers that she lost her temper during a row with her husband because the responsibility of walking their two Yorkshire Terriers "always fell on her".

Police were alerted around 1pm on Sunday after neighbours saw what they first mistook for a cuddly toy being hurled to the ground.

Seconds later the animal’s bed, a dog collar and a lead were thrown out of the window followed by the second animal.

Both of the dogs were killed instantly in the 75ft fall.

The horror incident happened in the Albufereta neighbourhood of the east coast Spanish city of Alicante.

Officers called to the scene identified the dog’s owner by their microchips and help from witnesses.

The partner of the woman held, a Spanish national with no previous convictions, is said to have corroborated her shock explanation for her actions.

The dogs’ bodies were transferred to a local animal protection centre.

It was not immediately clear if the suspect has already appeared in court, although a judge would be likely to release her on bail rather than remanding her in custody pending an ongoing investigation.

Animal mistreatment can be punished by a prison sentence of up to two years in Spain.

People convicted of the crime can also be banned from owning animals for up to four years.
