A lockdown that was put in place at the White House this afternoon has been lifted.

According to ABC news, the lockdown took place following reports of an aircraft in restricted airspace.

Offices at the US Capitol building were evacuated and the North Lawn of the White House was cleared.

A US official said the aircraft was not believed to be hostile.

The lockdown was lifted less than thirty minutes later.

Military fighter jets responded to the incident.
