Rugby: Gatland waits on injured trio

Irish trio Denis Hickie, Girvan Dempsey and David Wallace are all doubtful for next Sunday's Test match against Samoa at Lansdowne Road.

Irish trio Denis Hickie, Girvan Dempsey and David Wallace are all doubtful for next Sunday's Test match against Samoa at Lansdowne Road.

All three players missed their provinces' Heineken Cup ties at the weekend, Hickie (shoulder) and Dempsey (Achilles tendon) sitting out Leinster's victory in Newport, Munster flanker Wallace (shoulder) missing the win over Bridgend.

Ireland coach Warren Gatland is unlikely to risk any of the trio with New Zealand visiting Dublin on November 17 and is likely to call in Leinster's Keith Gleeson to replace Wallace in the back row.

The Ireland squad already includes Gordon D'Arcy and Jeremy Staunton and both provide adequate cover for full-back Dempsey and wing Hickie.
