Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson's father has not rushed to throw his support behind his son, who may be gearing up for a return to Downing Street following Liz Truss's resignation on Thursday.

Speaking to Newstalk's Pat Kenny show, Stanley Johnson said he is going to "look at what Boris has to offer" before giving him his vote.

"Yes, of course I recognise he has got a fantastic record - and he was voted in 2019 with an 80-seat majority - but there are certain things which, even though I’m his father, I would want to be sure about," Mr Johnson said.

"I want to be sure that he really tries to reset the relationships with the EU," he added.

The former MEP said his son was "ironically" one of the best placed people to mend fences with the EU, having been instrumental in the UK's push to leave the bloc, adding: "I think that is exactly why he has a strength."

Boris Johnson's comeback is quickly gaining traction, however, his former chancellor, Rishi Sunak, remains the favourite to become the next Tory leader and British prime minister.

Ms Truss's brief stint in office came about after Mr Johnson tendered his resignation in July after he became embroiled in a steady stream of scandals, including the so-called Partygate.

Mr Johnson eventually lost the confidence of key cabinet members, including Mr Sunak, as well as the powerful Conservative backbenchers group, the 1922 Committee, leading to his departure.
