The Pentagon has confirmed US special forces attacked a Taliban command centre and an airfield in Afghanistan last night.

They say they destroyed weapons and gained intelligence as America completed its first ground mission on the war against terrorism.

Officials say they are now preparing to attack other targets in Afghanistan. The Pentagon denies claims by the Taliban that it shot down the US helicopter that killed two American soldiers, confirming it was accident.

General Richard Meyers echoed President Bush's earlier comments by praising the men that were killed. He said all those that fought and gave their lives for America and freedom are heroes and their country is proud of them.
