A married Irish woman has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a man at the spa of a Magaluf hotel where she is understood to have been staying with her husband.
She was hauled to court after being accused of touching her alleged victim’s genitals without his consent.
The woman was taken into the court building in the Majorcan capital Palma by an armed police officer.
Police are expected to reveal more detail about Wednesday’s arrest in the coming hours.
The Irish tourist, who was released on bail by an investigating judge still probing the alleged crime, has not been named.
The alleged sex assault happened around 6pm on Tuesday. The hotel has not been identified.
Well-placed sources said the Swedish man was already in the hotel sauna when the female holidaymaker came in and sat near him and struck up a conversation with him after asking him how long he had been in Magaluf.
She left the sauna and took a dip in a swimming pool beside it before following the man into a Turkish steam bath where the alleged sex assault took place, according to a police report sent to the investigating court.
The male holidaymaker is understood to have alerted hotel staff who called the police after telling the Irish woman to stop as she “sexually molested” him without warning.
Although she denied any inappropriate behaviour when cops reached the hotel and quizzed her on the spot, she told the judge she regretted her actions and wrongly thought the man was interested in her in court hours later.
Her alleged court confession has not yet been confirmed by police or court officials.
Well-placed sources confirmed the woman had confessed to touching the Swedish holidaymaker’s genitals when she went to court – but insisted it was a misunderstanding and she thought he was interested in her after small talk.
Police insiders also said the male hotel guest had entered the Turkish steam bath where the incident took place when she was already inside it after they initially got talking in a next-door sauna in the hotel spa, not the other way round as was initially reported.
The insider said: “She’s very embarrassed about what happened.
“She declined to answer police questions at the station but did speak in court and say she had touched the man’s genitals after some small talk because she thought he was interested in her.
“As soon as he asked her to stop and said he didn’t want her to continue, she did stop.
“The court will now have to decide whether a crime took place but for the time being this woman remains under judicial investigation, although she has not been formally accused at this stage of any crime.”
The hotel where the incident took place is not being named, partly to protect the identity of the Swedish holidaymaker.
A well-placed source said: “The woman was arrested on Tuesday evening and spent that night in a police cell before being taken to court the following day.”
Her current whereabouts is unknown, although she is still thought to be in Majorca despite being free to leave the island and return home as no conditions have been attached to her provisional release. It is not known if the Swedish holidaymaker who alerted hotel staff about what had happened in the spa is still staying there.
It is also not clear if the Irish woman has told her husband she had been arrested and whether she has explained the full reasons for her absence from the hotel where they were staying on Tuesday night.
The female tourist is being represented by a well-known Palma-based lawyer called Joan Arbos.
He said on Thursday: “I have asked for the case against my client to be discontinued on the basis that I don’t consider that a crime has taken place.”
