Trump visit

Plans by former US president Donald Trump to visit his family’s golf resort in Co Clare later this month have been scrapped.

It had been expected that he would arrive in Ireland on August 27th and stay at his family-owned hotel in Doonbeg for two nights when security was expected to be tight.

Mr McClean (76), of Casimir Avenue, Harold's Cross, Dublin, was charged on Tuesday with 49 counts of indecent assault of a number of boys at Terenure College in the 1970s and 1980s.

He was then brought to appear before Judge John King at Dublin District Court.

Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Det Garda James Duffy of Crumlin Garda station told Judge King the accused made no reply to charges.

He said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) directed that the accused face “trial on indictment”, meaning the case would go forward to the Circuit Court which has wider sentencing powers.

Ryan Giggs trial

Former Manchester United footballer Ryan Giggs has told a jury he has never been faithful in any of his romantic relationships, but he has never assaulted a woman.

Giggs began giving evidence in his defence for the first time on Tuesday at Manchester Crown Court, where he is on trial accused of assaulting his ex-partner Kate Greville (38) and her younger sister Emma Greville (26) on November 1st, 2020.

The 48-year-old is also accused of using controlling and coercive behaviour against Kate Greville.

The former winger’s barrister Chris Daw QC, calling his client to the witness box, asked Giggs if he agreed he was “well known” the world over for being a footballer.

West Cork home

Irish actor Paul Mescal and his partner, Los Angeles-based songwriter Phoebe Bridgers, are in the process of buying a home in west Cork’s Schull/Ballydehob area.

The duo are following in the footsteps of another A-lister and Mescal's latest co-star, Oscar-nominated Saoirse Ronan, who also bought an Irish base near Ballydehob two years ago.

Mescal shot to fame in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney's Normal People during the confines of the first Covid-19 lockdown.

His career trajectory is proving to be stellar, and buying a retreat from the glitz in glamorous west Cork is next on the list, the A-list.

Mescal and his partner Phoebe Bridgers are set to own a place near Schull, and once it is secured they will be near Oscar and Bafta-nominated actor Saoirse Ronan, who previously bought near Ballydehob in summer 2020.
