Man accused of murdering wife and children found dead in Midlands Prison

A man accused of murdering his wife and two young children at their south Dublin home in 2020 has been found dead at Midlands Prison.

Sameer Syed (38) was due to stand trial at the Central Criminal Court on June 15th for the murder of his wife Seema Banu (37), his daughter Asfira Riza (11) and son Faizan Syed (6) at Llewellyn Court, Rathfarnham, Dublin 16 in October 2020. His trial was expected to last five weeks.

The Irish Prison Service said it could confirm “the death of a prisoner in the Midlands Prison” on Thursday but provided no further detail.

Teenager dies following crash involving car and lorry

A teenager has died following a collision involving a car and a lorry in County Cavan.

The fatal crash which occurred at approximately 6pm on Thursday on the N3, Kilnaleck, some 65 miles north-west of Dublin.

A boy aged 17 was seriously injured during the collision. He was taken to Cavan General Hospital where he later died.

A woman in her 50s and man in his 40s were also taken to Cavan General Hospital to be treated for their injuries, which are understood to be serious but non-life threatening.

Panel investigating assault on Capitol blame Trump for 'coup’

The House panel investigating the January 6th insurrection at the US Capitol have laid the blame firmly on former US president Donald Trump.

The committee said the assault was not spontaneous but an “attempted coup” and a direct result of the defeated president’s effort to overturn the 2020 election.

With a never-before-seen 12-minute video of the deadly violence and testimony from Mr Trump’s most inner circle, the House committee said the former president’s repeated lies about election fraud and his public effort to stop Joe Biden’s victory led to the attack and imperilled American democracy.

Opposition calls for emergency budget as inflation reaches 38-year high

The Social Democrats are calling on the government to introduce a mini budget following the publication of figures which show inflation at a 38-year high.

The party says the historic inflation rate coupled with the announcement that interest rates are on the way up in the coming weeks will compound the financial difficulties already facing many families.

Co-leader of the Party Roisin Shortall said the government need to establish an emergency fund to help those most at risk.
