Booster rollout

A new plan for the rollout of booster vaccinations will be published this week, with the Government aiming to administer 1.5 million jabs by Christmas.

The importance of the booster campaign has been underlined by the threat of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, with studies showing that three doses are needed to offer significant protection against it.

The HSE is currently working on revised plans to speed up the booster programme for adults and teenagers, and to begin administering vaccines to children aged 5-11 years.

Fuel protest

The south bore of the Dublin Tunnel has been closed due to congestion as truckers stage a protest in the capital.

Major traffic tailbacks formed in and out of Dublin Port in the afternoon as members of a truckers’ group took part in a rolling demonstration over high fuel prices.

The Irish Truckers and Haulage Association Against Fuel Prices said it was taking to the streets a month after another demonstration brought traffic in the city centre and on the M50 to a standstill.

Kevin Sheehy murder trial

A UK man who used his jeep to repeatedly run over Irish boxing champion Kevin Sheehy has been found guilty of his murder.

The Central Criminal Court trial heard the five-time Irish boxing champion fought to get up off the ground after he was first hit but the UK-registered Mitsubishi Shogun jeep ran him over twice again at speed.

The jury agreed with the prosecution's case that Logan Jackson had deployed his jeep as a murder weapon "as sure and as clear" as if it was a gun or a knife.

The status yellow alert will take effect at 7pm this evening and run until 9am tomorrow.

The forecaster said there will be reduced visibility in some areas leading to difficult travel conditions.
