First Minister resigns

Northern Ireland First Minister Paul Givan has announced his resignation from Stormont’s powersharing Executive.

The move by the Lagan Valley MLA is part of the DUP’s escalating protest strategy against Brexit’s Northern Ireland Protocol.

It comes 24 hours after DUP Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots acted unilaterally to order a halt to agri-food checks required under the post-Brexit trading arrangements.

Cost of living package

The Government will “soon” bring forward a package of measures to tackle the cost-of-living crisis, Leo Varadkar has said.

The Tánaiste told the Dáil that the Government accepts it has not done enough to support households facing financial pressure.

Sinn Féin finance spokesman Pearse Doherty, whose party has accused the Government of being out of touch on the issue, told the Dáil there is “no doubt” people are facing a cost-of-living crisis.

Golfgate trial

A judge has dismissed charges against all the defendants in a trial related to an Oireachtas Golf Society event.

Galway East Independent TD Noel Grealish, 55, former Fianna Fail senator Donie Cassidy, 75, John Sweeney, 60, and his son James Sweeney, 32, who own the Station House Hotel, had been accused of illegally holding the event in August 2020.

All four faced a single charge that they organised an event that contravened the Health Act 1947, as amended, to prevent, limit, minimise or slow the spread of Covid-19.

St.Stephen's Green attack

A man charged over random attacks on a woman and two men in Dublin’s St Stephen’s Green has been remanded in custody.

Ruzmond Muwaniri (33) with an address at North Circular Road, Dublin 7, was arrested on Wednesday and held at Pearse Street Garda station.

He was charged with assault causing harm to a named woman at St Stephen’s Green south on Tuesday.

Mr Muwaniri was also accused of assaulting two men, also causing them harm, on Wednesday.

Beer kegs theft

A Meath pub has captured CCTV footage of thieves stealing seven kegs of beer only minutes after they were delivered while the owners were organising a family funeral.

The theft of the beer comes just a few weeks after the Kilberry Pub and Kitchen outside Navan fully reopened when restrictions were lifted.

It is believed that it is the third premises in the area that has been targeted for kegs in the last few weeks.
