Limerick Hospital issues

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) has outlined concerns around staff and patient safety in University Hospital Limerick.

This comes as 118 patients are without a bed in the hospital this morning

The number of patients on trolleys in University Hospital Limerick today make up over 25.2 per cent of the total number of patients on trolleys across the country today (468 patients).

Dublin Airport chaos

Dublin Airport has apologised for chaotic scenes at the weekend that saw more than 1,000 passengers miss flights due to lengthy queues, saying it had “let the nation down”.

Airport operator daa this morning confirmed that “well over” 1,000 passengers missed flights on Sunday due to a lack of security staff, leaving travellers stranded in queues outside and inside both terminal buildings.

The number could rise as the airport completes a final tally.

Spokesman Kevin Cullinane said passengers financially impacted by the queues would be compensated “as quickly as possible”.

Lisa Smith verdict

Lisa Smith has been found guilty of membership of the terrorist organisation Isis by the Special Criminal Court.

Mr Justice Tony Hunt revealed the verdict of the three-judge, non-jury court in a detailed judgment this morning.

Having first revealed that the court found her not guilty of funding terrorism, he then went through the evidence relating to membership and said the prosecution had established beyond reasonable doubt that Ms Smith travelled to Syria "with her eyes open" and pledged allegiance to the organisation led by terrorist leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Cost of living survey

One in five people are living in poverty across the State amid the ongoing cost of living crisis, a new study has found.

According to Social Justice Ireland (SJI), the overall poverty rate increases from 11.6 per cent before housing costs are included, to 19 per cent after housing costs are counted – an increase of almost 371,000 people.

SJI's latest study ‘Housing Costs and Poverty 2022’ highlights how, when including housing costs, the real number of people in poverty is 952,185, which is almost one in five of the total population.

The research also found that renters are the worst affected group, with 41.6 per cent at risk of poverty after housing payments.

ESB roles

The Electricity Supply Board (ESB) will recruit 1,000 people over the next three years to support the delivery of its strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2040.

Jobs at the State-owned electricity company will be available across a range of technical and specialist skills including finance, IT, HR, engineering and customer service.

Positions include marine geologists, hydrology scientists, cyber specialists, data scientists, project management, network planning, commercial analysts, customer service and qualified electricians.

Wexford crash

A driver has died after their car crashed into a ditch and caught on fire in Co Wexford on Sunday evening.

The fatal single-vehicle collision occurred in the townland of Clonhaston outside Enniscorthy at around 7.30pm.

In a statement on Sunday evening, gardaí said the identity of the driver has yet to be confirmed.

“The vehicle collided with a roadside ditch on the R744 in Clonhaston and subsequently went on fire,” a spokesperson said.
