The iconic Soccer Saturday trio of Matt Le Tissier, Phil Thompson and Charlie Nicholas have been axed by Sky Sports.

As The Mirror in the UK reported, Sky have cut a number of staff members recently in an effort to reduce costs.

The former Southampton player Matt Le Tissier took to Twitter today to address the news:

"Enjoyed my time at Sky Sports, time to look forward to life’s next challenge, thank you for the support down the years and special thanks to the backroom team which include Caroline Eccles, Carly Bassestt and Trevor Simmons amongst many others, good luck all have a lovely day," he said."

As well as Le Tissier, former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson was also let go by Sky yesterday. As a player he won sixteen major titles with Liverpool and he was a key player in their European cup wins.

In a statement on Twitter he said "I’ve had a great 22 years with Sky Sports. Enjoyed every minute with some amazing people on the show and behind the scenes which made it the iconic show it is today.Good luck to Sky, Jeff, Merse (Paul Merson) and the new gang on Soccer Saturday."

The third member of the Soccer Saturday team to get the boot is former Scottish footballer Charlie Nicholas. As a forward he played for the likes of Celtic, Arsenal and Aberdeen during his career.

All three pundits have contributed to the huge success that Soccer Saturday is today and it remains to be seen who will join host Jeff Stelling and Paul Merson on the show this upcoming season.
