The great-grandson of Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini has signed for Lazio.

Romano Floriani Mussolini, 18, is expected to feature for the Serie A club's youth team initially.

The defender, whose second name is Benito, had made two trial appearances for the Rome-based club.

A section of the Lazio support is known for racist chants and salutes.

The signing of Mussolini is likely to cause a great deal of controversy in the Italian capital.

The manager of Lazio's youth team, Mauro Bianchessi, said he has not spoken to the player's parents about his “burdensome surname”.

He told the Repubblica newspaper: “I like him. He's not a seasoned player yet, but he looks promising.

“The burdensome surname? I've never spoken to his parents, and the only thing that matters is whether a player deserves to play. Nothing else. He's a humble boy who's never complained.”
