Thursday’s TV tips

Too Fat for Love: Supersized (Ch5, 8pm)

Looking for love can be hard at the best of times, but for the obese it can even tougher. This documentary follows three supersize singletons who are searching for like-minded – and like-bodied – people.

Eddie weighs more than 25 stone and rarely leaves the house, except for his weekly trip to bingo.

Thirty-stone gay guy Stavros has tried all the dating sites but cannot find a man to match his larger-than-life personality.

Sam has never had a boyfriend, putting it down to lack of confidence. Cameras follow all three as they go out on two dates each – will any of them find love at last?

America’s Got Talent (TV3, 9pm)

Episode 9 (Judges Cuts Week 2)

The second week of Judge Cuts brings even more excitement and surprise to the stage.

Besides having famed recording artist Michael Bublé joining the judges on the panel, this week brings some of the most incredible second round acts so far.

Once again, 20 acts must be cut down to just seven that will advance to Radio City Music Hall.

Very British Problems (Ch4, 9pm)

This comedy series was inspired by a Twitter feed of the same name, which makes it sound rather new and cutting edge although anyone who saw the first episode last week may conclude that it also bears a striking resemblance to the largely pre-social media Grumpy Old Men.

But when the celebs doing the thinking and moaning are this entertaining, who cares?

This week James Corden, Jonathan Ross, Ruth Jones, Stephen Mangan and co ruminate on the problems Brits face when they venture outside the house.

They point out that everything from a trip to the supermarket to a walk to the office kitchen can be fraught with resentment and social anxiety – and the only cure is to make sure you buy the cheapest round at the pub...

Who Do You Think You Are? (BBC1, 9pm)

British-born actress Jane Seymour knows there is Jewish ancestry on her father’s side of the family, but beyond that she knows very little, other than her own suspicions that they suffered in the Holocaust.

As she researches her paternal great-aunts Jadwiga and Michaela, she soon finds out more about their experiences under Nazi occupation.

The search takes her to Warsaw and France, uncovering stories of life in a ghetto and a terrifying flight to Switzerland from the Germans.

Sinister (Film4, 9.00pm)

(2012) With the sequel due for release tomorrow, here’s a timely opportunity to catch up on the events of the original. Novelist Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) moves to a new home with his wife and children.

Ellison neglects to mention to his brood that the previous owners of the house came to an unfortunate end, and the sole survivor – a little girl – disappeared without trace.

Ellison intends to use this grisly history as the basis for a new book and as he delves into the case, he discovers strange symbols which prompt him to enlist the help of Professor Jonas (Vincent D’Onofrio), an expert in cults, to unravel the mystery.

In the process, Tracy and the children are targeted by dark forces and Ellison races against time to save the people he loves from the same fate as the previous owners.
