The family of Saudi extremist Osama bin Laden, the prime suspect for the American atrocity, today denounced bin Laden and condemned his acts.
The family expressed deep sorrow and offered condolences to the victims of the New York and Washington attacks.
Sheik Abdullah Awad bin Laden, head of the wealthy bin Laden family and uncle of the notorious Osama, said the family condemned ‘all violent and terrorist acts, even if Osama is behind them.’
In a telephone interview from Jedah, Sheik Abdullah said the family had previously announced its position to distance themselves from Osama and his actions.
He was referring to a 1994 statement from the bin Laden family expressing its ‘regret, denunciation and condemnation of all acts that Osama bin Laden may have committed, which we do not condone and we reject.’
Four years later, a US Federal court indicted bin Laden for allegedly masterminding the August 1998 bombings of US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, in which 231 lost their lives.
He has been living in Afghanistan since 1996. The ruling Afghan Taliban militia have so far rejected demands to extradite him to the US for trial.
