'GMTV' to end in September
'GMTV' is to be axed after 17 years, it has been announced.
The ITV1 breakfast show - famed for its celebrity chats and lifestyle slots - is to be replaced by a current affairs and news programme, which will be fronted by Adrian Chiles and an as-yet unnamed glamorous female co-host.
Insiders say the name 'Day' is one of the favourites but it has yet to be decided and ITV bosses plan to splash out lots of money in a bid to rival the BBC's 'Breakfast'.
A source added to The Daily Mirror newspaper: "It will cash in on ITV's BAFTA-winning journalism and really try to sock it to the BBC."
It is thought current presenters Kate Garraway and Emma Crosby are to get the axe, while Andrew Castle has now quit his position as presenter.
He said: "I have had a fantastic 10 years fronting one of the UK's most watched television programmes, but with all the changes taking place at 'GMTV' I felt it was time for a new chapter in my life as well.
"I enjoyed both meeting and working with some very talented people at the programme and I wish all those at 'GMTV' every success in the future."
Castle will continue on the show until September, when it is thought the new show will be launched.
His resignation follows both Penny Smith and Ben Shepherd quitting.
