Malone ‘delighted’ with Paralympics silver
Ballinteer swimmer David Malone admitted to being 'really delighted' with his silver medal in this afternoon's S8 100m backstroke final in Athens.
A third ever Paralympic medal for the 27-year-old - following silver and gold at Atlanta and Sydney - Malone went into the final ranked fourth in the world, and had initially targeted a bronze finish.
"I thought going into the final that bronze would be the best I could manage, but I'm really delighted with silver," said Malone, who works as a swimming coach.
"1:12 was my best time in three years, so all the training has paid off definitely. It was a really tough swim, but probably means more to me than my other medals.
"The last 15 metres were really, really difficult but I got there and I am thrilled", he added.
Ireland's only athlete involved in competition tonight is former rugby player Gareth Culliton. Following disappointment in the F52 shot putt, the Laois man is currently involved in the discus final.
