Focus on Irish tax laws as Kenny heads for Brussels
Ireland's tax laws will come under the spotlight again today when the Taoiseach attends a European Council meeting in Brussels.
The talks follow the publication yesterday of a report by the US Senate which claims that Ireland's tax laws enabled the tech giant Apple to avoid paying billions of dollars in tax.
Enda Kenny denied the claim in the Dáil and said that Ireland doesn't negotiate special tax deals with companies.
Ahead of today's European Council meeting, Kenny issued a statement saying that Ireland is committed to fair tax competition between member states.
However, he insists that direct taxation is a matter for individual states and each member must retain the right to decide its own taxation rules and levels.
