Soccer: Injury-plagued Pallister quits

Gary Pallister has called time on his distinguished playing career after losing his battle against injury.

Gary Pallister has called time on his distinguished playing career after losing his battle against injury.

The 36-year-old underwent surgery on his back last season after managing just nine games.

The Middlesbrough defender was harbouring hopes that he could return for the new campaign, but now he has decided to call it a day.

"I had discussed with Bryan Robson the possibility of playing this year," admitted the former Manchester United star.

"Unfortunately, following the back operation, a subsequent injury to a nerve in my foot has forced me to reluctantly make this decision.

"My specialist has told me that I should make a full recovery in time.

"I would like to thank the fans, all the coaching staff and officials for their support.

"Although this is a sad day for me, I count myself very lucky to have played my football at the very highest level whilst playing alongside many world class players. I have many wonderful memories to look back on."

Pallister's departure comes just weeks after new manager Steve McClaren took over from Robson.

McClaren said: "Gary has enjoyed a fantastic career as one of the game's best defenders with Middlesbrough, Manchester United and England.

"However, Gary's departure creates an opportunity for us to develop some of our talented, young players.

"On behalf of everyone at the club, I'd like to thank Gary for all his efforts and wish him all the very best in what ever he decides to do next."

Pallister joined Boro from Northern League Billingham Town in November 1984 for the price of a set of strips and a few match balls, but made his name during a nine-year spell at Manchester United where he proved excellent value for the £2.3million Alex Ferguson paid for his services by helping the club to 10 major honours, including four league titles.

He made the bulk of his 22 international appearances for England as a United player, where he forged a superb partnership with Steve Bruce.

He returned to Boro during the summer of 1998.
