Police investigating a man’s murder have been attacked by a crowd throwing bottles and stones.
Officers came under fire yesterday for the second day running following the death of Paul Magee, 39, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
He was found in the street in Lurgan, Co Armagh, having allegedly been punched during a drunken row.
PSNI Chief Inspector Pauline Shields appealed for the abuse of police to stop.
“It is totally unacceptable that police and other emergency services are met with stones, bricks, bottles and petrol bombs when they respond to a call,” she said.
“If officers have difficulty carrying out their job because of violent assaults then it is the members of the public who suffer and are put at risk.
“This community does not wish to see a situation that descends into violence and disorder.”
Mr Magee, from Woodville Street, Lurgan, was found in the Shankill Street/Prospect Way area of the town.
Police are following a definite line of inquiry.
“We are concerned that someone could be seriously injured should this activity continue and would appeal to councillors and community representatives in the district to support their local police officers and exercise any influence they have to control these situations,” Ms Shields added.
