Galway United has announced the signing of former Longford Town midfielder Gary Deegan, despite heavy interest from both Cork City and Bohemians.
Deegan was the driving force behind Longford Town’s late revival last season and put in some powerful performances in the centre of midfield during 2007.
United manager Tony Cousins believes 20-year-old Deegan will be a big addition to the squad.
"Gary, despite his young age, has proven he can compete comfortably at the highest level and I’m sure he’ll give us that extra bite in the centre of midfield. He was sorely missed by Longford Town in their FAI Cup final appearance last December due to suspension."
Former Shelbourne player, Deegan, spent the 2006 season on loan to Kilkenny City. The young midfielder was then released by Shelbourne in January 2007.
Longford Town took full advantage, and signed the 2005 FAI Schools International Player of the Year, on the eve of the 2007 campaign.
