Gardaí are due to formally launch a murder investigation following the discovery of a man's body in Co Meath.

Gardaí are due to formally launch a murder investigation following the discovery of a man's body in Co Meath.

The remains were found by a woman out walking her dog on Mornington Beach near Drogheda - at around 9.30am this morning.

The State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy is conducting a post mortem examination on his body this evening.

It is understood that the man - aged in his 40s - had suffered serious head injuries as a result of an assault.

A second scene has also been sealed off on Marsh Street in Drogheda - where blood was discovered on a footpath.
