A Kurdish illegal immigrant was stabbed to death today during a brawl involving dozens of people at an overcrowded Red Cross refugee centre near the Channel Tunnel in France.
Several others were injured, including at least one seriously, during the clashes that broke out between about 50 Iraqi Kurds and Afghan refugees at the camp in Sangatte.
It was the latest in a string of violent clashes at the Sangatte centre, which currently shelters about 1,400 refugees, mostly Afghans and Kurds.
The centre, located near the entrance to the Channel tunnel that links Britain and France, has become a magnet for refugees hoping to use the tunnel to illegally enter Britain, where immigration laws are relatively liberal.
An investigation was been opened into the death.
